I have two passions in life — online dating being the first one, and the second one is gaming. When I heard that I could bring the two together on the matching site, I rushed to try it. After all, the possibility to exchange Steam WishLists on Valentine’s Day is what I live for.

Mocospace is a dating platform, built around games. With more than 100 million members, it is the biggest love-finding website for gamers. The types of possible relationships vary from marriage to one-time things. The community is most active in the United States, UK, and Canada.

After dedicating a lot of time to the platform, I am ready to dive into the deepest aspects of Mocospace dating. The review is based on five critical criteria.

  • Affordability: free and paid features, their differences, and available memberships.
  • Audience quality: detecting fakes and scammers.
  • Interface: evaluating the structure and general feel of the platform.
  • Security and privacy: the risks that daters might face on Mocospace;
  • Hookup chance: talking about my results and live experiences.

MocoSpace’s free version took me by a pleasant surprise — I didn’t feel limited in any way. For free, you can message matches, scroll the feed unlimitedly, preview pictures, access fool profiles, and play games.

The only drawback of the free version is advertising. It’s non-invasive. Still, ads could get distracting if I was in the middle of the game.

Paid services

MocoSpace uses two premium models: a monthly subscription and a credit-based upgrade. I prefer a long-term option — paying for the entire month is cheaper at the end of the day. However, those who need only one premium feature or visit website rarely will see more sense in buying several credits, and choosing how to spend them.

The monthly subscription costs $7.99/m. It gets cheaper in long-term packages — $6.99/m for 3-months membership, and $5.99/m for 6-months package.

To buy 500 credits, you need to pay $4.99, for 1250 credits — $19.99. 15,500 credits cost $99.99 and cover the entire premium functionality.

Audience quality

Just as expected of the gaming platform, people are coming up with the weirdest usernames. Dating a guy called Killerwhostrikes5738 is not my idea of a dream date.

Fakes and scammers

After the registration, four guys and three girls messaged me, and they all were legit. However, when I started scrolling the feed, I noticed a lot of inactive accounts. There was no telling if they were fake or just abandoned — still, not too promising.

Some active accounts still bear no traces of personality. The owners are hiding behind shady names and an abstract pictures.

Age distribution

The platform is actively used by 18-24 years old, and slightly less by 25-30 years old millennials. I talked to dozens of people on the platform and only once met someone who was older than 35 years old. So if you were looking for a platform for cougars dating free, then Mocospace will not work for you.

I used Mocospace on my laptop and phone and wasn’t disappointed both times. The website looks nice, but it doesn’t look like a die-hard geek gaming community that I expected to see. Honestly, now Mocospace has little to do with games, becoming yet another generic dating website for everyone.

Signing up

The website offers two registration methods: you can fill out a form or connect your Facebook or Google account. I chose the second one — it was a mistake. I still had to fill out that same form — I gave the application permission to access my private data for no good reason.

If you choose a social media account registration, the website asks for your personal information, photo, friend list, name, and last name.

The registration form is long, but it doesn’t take much time — you choose most of the answers from the drop-down menu. The form design has its issues — reading the names of specific fields.

I like that Mocospace gives users a choice of the type of desired relationships. You can look for friends, network, hook up casually, or start a serious commitment.

I uploaded a headshot picture and added a short description with interests, romantic experience, and relationship goals. MocoSpace doesn’t require users to fill out any forms besides the registration.

As soon as I was done with my profile, MocoSpace matched me up with people nearby. Just like on Facebook or Instagram, you have a scrollable feed with potential dates. You can see their profiles, send a message, or add them to the friend list. By the look of it, MocoSpace resembles an old-fashioned social network, not a swipe-right dating site.

Matches are sorted by age, gender, location, name, contact information. Additional filters like orientation, ethnicity, looking for, and relationships, are available only for premium users.

To see best picks, I needed to get at least to the second page. Otherwise, the software showed VIP profiles regardless of my filters.

I expected something similar to Discord adapted for sext with strangers — a minimalistic dark team, voice communication, group chats — just like gamers like it. Instead, Monoscope offers a primitive message box with no filters. It looks very 2007.

In a free version, you can only send messages and preview the status of another user. To see if the text was read, users have to upgrade to VIP accounts.

Street Wars

For die-hard gaming fans like me, the chat is an annoying way of communication. I headed straight to the built-in dating game. In Street Wars, you face battles, fight bosses, pass quests and get points alongside the future match.

The game gets boring soon. Free users have only 100 stamina points which are enough for one fight. You can purchase more points with in-game dollars, but these are not renewable and have to be bought with credits.

There are no matching algorithms in the game — I fought random users, offered by the game, and had no desire to build a connection. Playing Street Wars is a fun activity for shaking up online dating routine, but it doesn’t lead to a meaningful relationship.

Mobile app

MocoSpace mobile service is better designed than its website. There are clear motifs behind it — the majority of Monoscope users date in the mobile version. It looks more modern, but still, no contender to Tinder or Pure.

The best part of MocoSpace dating is its games, but only if you cashed out for the subscription. You can play poker, pinball, third-person shooters, retro-arcades, and geek out about recent releases — which is fun if you don’t have gaming soulmates in your social circle.

I still doubt whether this approach works for dating, but I did manage to find two potential friends and even one designer for my creative projects. Well, at least networking and friendship goals were complete.

Privacy and security

Mocospace moderation is by no means strict. You can register with your Facebook account — and we all know it takes no effort to make a fake Facebook page. Users aren’t required to add their real names or pictures. You never know who is hiding behind a photo of Fighting Devils. I never saw a similar thing on OkCupid or Pure, platforms that indeed put a lot of effort in their moderation.

image 8 mocospace - How I tried dating on Mocospace: the full review

Mocospace allows users to mute incoming messages and chat room contacts. You can report suspicious accounts to moderation.

In 2013, the website became notorious for three rapes. Women found dates on Mocospace and were molested. The scariest part is, there was nothing inappropriate in their dialogues. My dates were far from dangerous, but still, I never contact people with fake pictures and shady usernames.

Hookup chance

Chances to get a date here are high enough. Out of 10 guys, three were ready to meet me. The quality of these dates is an entirely different topic. I went to see all three matches, and they looked nothing like their profile pictures.

Generally, you can find a date who’d be very happy to free adult hookup, but chances are, you won’t be up for it as soon as you meet. The platform is full of surprises — people name fake age, locations, pictures. On the date, I didn’t get just what I saw on the website.

Matching algorithms

The selection doesn’t go further than search filters, and about half of them are available for free. Premium users are always pushed to the top, and finding a new match among actually compatible profiles turns into a treasure hunt.

All Mocospace games are incredibly random — you fight with weird profiles of people who live in different countries. It gets even more discouraging once you’ve paid for the subscription — it doesn’t guarantee the result at all.

Is MocoSpace free?

All basic dating functionality — messaging, adding to contact list, profile previews — is available in the free version. To access games and chats, you need to buy either a subscription or credits.

Is MocoSpace legit and real?

Yes, it’s real. However, the website has a lot of fake accounts, and even those that are active, have no own photos and no detailed descriptions.

Is it worth paying for MocoSpace?

Only if you want to use dating games with no limitations. VIP subscription allows you to use unlimited stamina in Street Wars and get pushed to the search top.

What kind of dating site is MocoSpace?

It’s a dating social network for quick hookups, friendships, and networking. The platform revolves around games and gaming.

mobile application for MocoSpace - How I tried dating on Mocospace: the full review

Is there a mobile application for MocoSpace?

Yes, it supports Android and iOS smartphones. The free add is more popular than the web version, so it’s a must-download.

Can I search for someone on MocoSpace?

Yes, you can find people by their names, emails, mobile phones, and usernames.

Can I have two MocoSpace accounts?

Yes, as soon as they don’t share the same email address, Google account, or Facebook profile.

Can MocoSpace delete my account?

Yes, but it happens extremely rarely. Moderation is not strict about on-site behavior. Only countless reports from other users can cause your profile to be deleted. VIP profiles usually don’t get deleted at all.

Is MocoSpace for serious relationships?

Theoretically, the website allows choosing the option of “Looking for a serious relationship” during registration. In my experience, it’s not a suitable platform for long-term commitments due to the amount of fake information.

The final word

MocoSpace took an ambitious premise and failed to complete it properly. Instead of creating a dedicated gaming community, the platform became yet another dating website. Even so, it lacks proper security and matching system to compete with wide-audience dating websites.

For safe hookups, I would not experiment with shady MocoSpace profiles, and go for secure options. So far, my new favorite is Pure — it has a similar fun element to the dating algorithm, but there is much stricter moderation in place. For me, security and user pool are the main dating priorities.
