Blendr is an example of a platform that has all it takes to succeed. The site is created by Joel Simkhai, the person behind Grindr, and the website is powered by Badoo, one of the most popular international dating services.

The platform is focused more on serious relationships, and less on casual encounters, unlike Grindr. Did the website manage to combine concepts of Grindr and Badoo into a promising service? I set out to find out and spent a month on the platform.

My Blendr review, as usual, is based on analyzing five criteria.

  • Affordability: I take a look at the service’s costs and features;
  • Audience quality: I analyze the user pool and look for fakes;
  • Interface: my exploration of the website’s functionality and design;
  • Security and privacy: I take a look at the website’s Privacy Policy and Terms of Use;
  • Hookup chances: sharing personal hookup experiences.

Let’s see if the application takes the most out of its possibilities and delivers a unique take on Grindr’s and Baddo’s features.

Blendr has a minimalistic but slightly generic page of a typical dating website

Affordability

★★★★☆

Right away, the service impressed me with its price politics. The website’s free version allows registering an account, looking for matches nearby, and even message other users. This means any user can find a date using only free features of the service.

Still, to review the full capacity of the website, I upgraded my Blendr membership — the premium version costs $3.99 per week, and a monthly plan is $12.99. It’s an affordable offer compared to similar solutions on the market.

Premium version gives access to profile statistics, undo matching decisions, view profiles of other members anonymously, and get connected to new members automatically. The upgrade is well worth the price — the benefits are thought out.

Audience quality

★★★☆☆

The website’s user pool has 300,000 members. Users are active — the service is visited 200,000 times per month. The majority of users are located in the United States, Australia, and Canada.

Blendr’s interface

Age and gender distribution

Blendr is popular among men and women alike: 65% of accounts are male, female profiles make up around 35%. 18-35-year-old people mostly use the platform.

Fakes and scammers

At first glance, Blender’s Feed looks legit. All profiles have a lot of pictures and realistic descriptions. However, as I started contacting members, I noticed that a lot of profiles are inactive. The service uses Facebook profiles for verification — and we know that creating a fake Facebook profile is not difficult. So, even if pages look real, some of them are inactive.

That said, the majority of Blendr’s users are legit. From my experience, I’d say that only about 15% of accounts seemed fake or abandoned

Interface

★★★☆☆

Blendr targets a younger audience — straight from the main page, the website’s minimalistic style is apparent immediately. However, the site doesn’t offer anything unique — it looks almost identical to Badoo and offers the same functionality as well.

Sign up

Blendr offers two sign-up options: you can connect a Facebook profile or sign up via email. If you go the second route, you’ll have to answers basic questions in the registration form — age, location, gender, orientation. Registration doesn’t require answering any additional questions — I did the customization after the profile was created.

Blendr’s user profiles look exactly like in Badoo

User profile

All members have separate fields where they can describe themselves, their expectations, perfect matches, and other important aspects of a relationship. Each user can upload several public and private images — the public ones can be rated by other members.

A unique aspect of Blendr dating is that other users can rate your page, and you can rate other profiles as well. I like the transparency that it provides, and it encourages people to work harder on filling out their profiles.

Connecting to other users

The main matching algorithm on Blendr is geo-targeting. You can look for people nearby and search for users according to locations and age range.

The platform has a unique function — “Encounters,” where people can quickly look through users nearby in a fun dating game. The game showed me other members’ photos and profile descriptions, pretty much like on Tinder.

The Blendr’s feed is simple and intuitive

Blendr’s features

Blendr isn’t exactly a unique dating platform. The functionality is similar to 90% of other dating services out there, but it’s structured pretty well. I can’t say that it’s better than Badoo — Blendr still looks like a cheap copy to me — but it works fine.

People nearby

The service combines independent search and pre-defined matches. Users can scroll the feed of profiles in the area, but they can also get a personalized digest of recommended members. It’s great because the service helps both enthusiastic people who like to make their own decisions, or less experienced daters, who’d like some advice.

Encounters

This is a Tinder-like feature where users get to see profiles one-by-one and swipe on the right, if they want to meet, or left for a no. It’s a fast way to find a date, although it doesn’t provide much information about members.

Virtual gifts

Aside from the full version, users also can buy virtual gifts — they are usually custom images or personalized emoji. To buy one gift, you know at least 100 credits.

Blendr’s mobile app is fun and easy to use

Mobile app

Blendr has a simple and intuitive mobile app. The functionality is minimalistic — on one page, you have the feed, and on another, Tinder-like experience of a casual-dating game. App version as the same as the desktop platform, and it’s entirely free.

Privacy and security

★★★☆☆

Blendr uses Badoo’s Privacy Policy, which is just another proof of how similar the two websites are. Kaspersky’s security has recently analyzed the safety of Badoo, and the results weren’t too optimistic. It turns out, the site is vulnerable to unprotected data transfers — hackers can easily get into members’ profiles, as well as man-in-the-middle attack — the site doesn’t verify the certificate authenticity.

Because of its similarities to Badoo, Blendr inherited all these security issues. The website doesn’t have any real verification system, too — Facebook and emails are easy to fake, so there are chances of scams as well

Are Blendr and Badoo the same?

Even though they are created by different teams and are technically different services, they are powered by the same functionality and have an identical design. Blendr also inherited Badoo’s Terms of Use as well as Privacy Policy. This also means that all security issues that Badoo has, exist on Blendr as well.

Is Blendr for hooking up?

Blendr is supposed to be a universal website for casual encounters and serious dates alike, but in reality, the platform mostly targets causal dates.

Does Blendr have an app?

Blendr has a mobile application in Google Play and App Store.

Can I use Blendr without Facebook?

Yes, you can sign up with an email address and use it for profile verification.

How does Blendr use Facebook?

Will Blendr post on my Facebook?

What are the rules in uploading photos?

All members are required to upload real pictures of themselves that display their faces. They can add pictures with friends or family member,s as soon as they identify themselves.

How can I verify my account?

You can verify your account on Google+, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The service also supports mobile number verification, which is the most reliable way of approving an account.

How long does the photo verification take?

Your photo will be verified in less than 2 minutes. It would be best if you took a selfie real-time from your desktop or mobile camera.

Can you tell me how to stop Blendr subscription fees?

All descriptions are renewed at the end of the month automatically. To cancel the subscription, go to the setting menu and choose to cancel the subscription.

Ready to meet new people?

Bottom line

Blendr is a universal dating website — it’s popular among guys and girls, people of different ages love it, and it’s open to long-term relationships and casual encounters. It’s a nice service for beginners in dating — you can explore different ways of dating — feed personalized digest, Tinder-like swiping — but also, try various types of relationships.

It’s a nice concept, but I think the website would benefit from adding unique functionality and interface. Blendr works like Badoo and feels like Badoo instead of offering unique experiences and benefits. If the website would have a personal touch on dating, it could be one of my favorites — but for now, the service lacks authenticity.

If you need tips on downloading and using the app, I suggest taking a look at this video. It provides excellent instructions about getting started that are clear and to-the-point.
